    “Is it the shoes?…It’s gotta be the shoes!” - Mars Blackmon

    Mars Blackmon, the highly recognizable early-90’s Nike commercial character played by Spike Lee, understood the power of Jordans. Mars believed the sneakers had the power to Jordanize anyone who wore Mr. 23’s branded sneakers.  Once the shoes were laced Mars expected them to enhance agility, perfect shooting ability, and so on.

    The Urkle- esque character with the Brooklyn branded bicycle hat got it half right. Jordans have the power to swiftly move people to the nearest urban footwear and apparel store with the latest Jordans in stock.  June 5 marks the release of the fifth Spizike of the year. Charlotte’s Flava Factory (2041 South Blvd., Suite D) has a fresh batch lined up for the picking.

    Air Jordans periodically releases revamped Spizikes, making the old school the new cool. Jordan Spizike Black/Varsity Red-Stealth are the final version of the five commemorative Spizikes. They pay tribute to the classic kicks with the memorable commercial featuring two black men on top of their game: Michael Jordan and Spike Lee.

    Tomorrow kicks off Memorial Day Weekend, which translates to barbecues, parties and sales. Urban clothing store Flava Factory gives you all three in one spot. Head down to 2041 South Blvd., Suite D, and get the weekend started off right.

    Every shoe in the store is on sale from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30. Sneaker freaks will burst with excitement upon entering the Factory. Jordans, Nike, Creative Recreation, Reebok, Alife, Adidas and more are priced to get the stock out of the door. Prices range from $50 to $75.

    In the Factory, time saves money. Throughout Memorial Day Weekend, from 10am to noon you can purchase brand named, unique sneakers for $10!!! (Yeah you read it right.) Is there a catch, you may ask? Slightly, shoes are a season or two out of date and every shoe size is not available. But come on, $10 for some slightly old Jordans, Nikes, and what not…you can’t beat that.

    Flava Factory understands that sneaker shopping can take a lot out of you, so they plan on feeding shoppers. Down-home soul food from Chicken Coup and finger-licking food from Mac’s Barbecue will be served. If you need something light, cold food selections will be available. Free drinks and wine will be served as well.

    Like any Memorial Day gathering, well dressed folks, good food and tasty drinks is not complete without good music. There will be a in-store DJ all weekend. And you know a good party, or good sale for that matter, does not end until early in the morning. From Friday through Sunday, Flava Factory will be open until 2am.

  • Diggy Simmons signs deal with Atlantic Records

    It’s time to Get Down with the Young King: Daniel “Diggy” Simmons.

    Diggy inked a deal with Atlantic Records on Monday, March 22. The wave of industry buzz surrounding his latest freestyle “Flow Stoopid” made the major label look Diggy’s way. His visceral flow over Nas’s rugged headnodder “Made You Look” caused internet chatter among well respected katz in the hip-hop industry. Kayne West, Common, Lupe Fiasco and Swizz Beatz gave Diggy’s track the much sought after “hip-hop cosign.”

    The Young King is making his way toward the Run DMC hip-hop thrown without the help of his Dad. The freestyle “Flow Stoopid” along with tracks from his previously released mixtape “First Flight” are all professing Diggy’s love for hip-hop and his determination to make it on his own. Without the use of his bloodline connection to Def Jam CEO Russell Simmons; the 15-year-old, fashion-forward, jetsetter got his major label deal.

    Verdict: Diggy Simmons most definitely has skills. Once he gets past the point of constantly feeling like he has to prove himself and thwart the naysayers, his conceptual talent will truly shine through.

    He knows his way around literary devices such as metaphors, similes, alliteration and etc.; and he has had a first-hand look at the business side of the hip-hop industry. I would not be surprised to see this driven Simmons kid carve himself a place as a young hip-hop mogul. His lyrical skills, fashion expertise and charisma put him in line to be a prodigy hip-hop mogul.  He could easily dominate the tween and teen sector of the industry.

    It is refreshing to hear a young teenager with respect for the craft of hip-hop. Far from the Souja Boy and New Boyz sound, this young man has staying power. Being the son of a hip-hop legend, I would expect nothing less.

  • Moms CAN bring Sexy Back

    After going to work, picking up the kids from school, making dinner, helping with homework, washing clothes and straightening up the house…trying to be sexy is the last thing on a mother’s mind. After the daily routine of being Superwoman all a mother wants to do is snuggle under the covers and get some uninterrupted dream time. But sometimes Mom wants to get all dolled up and feel sexy. Sometimes Mom needs to see if she can still attract the eyes of the handsome guy sitting at the bar.

    Mingleberry chatted with an ultimate sexy mom, Michelle Baena. This 36-years-old mother of three was Playboy’s May 2005 cover model. After her Real Desperate Housewives Playboy cover shoot she gained a following. That is what brought her to Charlotte last night. She was the headliner for Kiss Lounge’s regular Saturday event, Release Saturday. DJ Sanouk, owner of Lao Paperboy Management, brought Baena out to help draw a crowd to Kiss for his Bedtime Stories Tour.

    Baena said that many are surprise to find out that she is a mother of a 17, 9 and 8 year old. Baena said, “I have always wanted to model, but I had my children early in life. I didn’t really think it was going to happen.” After she had her third child, she decided to get in shape and try modeling. While searching the internet for gigs, she ran across a Playboy audition geared toward MILFs (Mothers I’d Like to F***). “Playboy was doing a search for desperate housewives, and I thought to myself…that is the best way for me to get in [the modeling industry]. I wasn’t a 21-year-old beach-top bunny, ya know.”  She sent in her photos and about a week later she got a call from Playboy.  Then they flew Baena out to Chicago.

    After Baena’s Playboy debut, her life became very hectic. “I was traveling a lot and doing a lot of work.” Baena did shoots for several fitness publications like American Curves, Surfing Magazine and Skateboarder Magazine. She was constantly doing meet-and-greets also. She still does regular photo shoots with Bench Warmer Trading Cards. These trading cards featuring attractive women in their favorite sports gear.

    After three years of running from place to place like a hyperactive kid, Beana decided to slow down for a moment. “In the last year I just decided to kinda take some time off. I want to focus a little bit more on family and personal issues.” Now she is edging her way back into modeling and touring. Being the headliner for the Bedtime Stories Tour is her line back into the hectic life of a sexy-model.

    Some moms do not have the desire to attract the attention of Playboy, but catching the eye of an attractive man is highly desirable. Beana decided that being a mom did not mean she was no longer sexy. She also realized that being a mom did not mean she had to put her dreams of modeling on hold. Beana used Playboy as a means to fulfill her dream and unleash her inner vixen.

    Moms should take a tip from Baena and  Justin Timberlake: Bring sexy back.
